A series of events have been announced to take place throughout Gateshead as part of Cycle September.

Events include a series of guided rides throughout Gateshead (with the Big Local Gateshead project) and in Chopwell Woods, suitable for beginner and regular cyclists aged over 16, and a number of ‘Dr Bike’ workshops designed to give bikes a basic ‘health check’.

Chopwell Woods rides

Lucy Brenkley from Forestry England said ‘This is a great opportunity for people to come and experience Chopwell Woods in a different way, as well as having the security of cycling on closed, traffic-free paths. The rides will be led by professional cycle guides, the groups will be a maximum of five people and are suitable for cyclists of any ability. We will also be providing bikes, helmets and equipment for people to loan for free for the duration of the sessions - making it accessible for everybody.’ Chopwell Woods sessions will run on the following dates:

  • Sat 12th Sept - 9.30 - 10.30 and 11 - 12
  • Sat 20th Sept - 9.30 - 10.30 and 11 - 12
  • Sat 27th Sept - 9.30 - 10.30 and 11 - 12

Sessions must be pre booked and bookings can be made on eventbrite or by calling 07771885084

Big Local Gateshead rides

Chris Folwell from Big Local Gateshead said ‘Our club is run by volunteers and is a really welcoming environment for new cyclists, all we ask for is a £1 optional donation if possible towards the club on each ride. We also provide bikes and helmets for people to loan during the rides if they don’t have their own. Rides take place three days a week, starting from the Big Local Bungalow on Derwentwater Road, next to the Teams Club car park:

  • Every Wednesday 10am - Challenging rides - 30+ miles
  • Every Friday 10am - Beginner rides - up to 10 miles
  • Every Sunday 10am - Intermediate rides - around 20 miles

There is no need to pre-register - just turn up on the day, although if it is your first time please arrive 20 minutes early for registration. More information, including the planned routes for the week, can be found on the Facebook group by searching BLG Bike Club, or by e-mailing hello@blgateshead.org.uk
