Houston is my hometown, born and raised there! I have been in Cali. for over 25 years. I am happy to know you found a walkable/bikable area! Houston is no joke with the traffic and tolls roads! They don't really cycle there! I would also be afraid of getting caught up in one of those Texas thunderstorms! ;-) I often think about moving back to Texas from Calfornia, but I think a smaller town would work better for me at this point now!

I think affordable housing is the biggest issue in our area, new developments on the edges are where people typically move to but they aren't well connected by public transit or bikable/walkable infrastructure to maybe places

To this I would add: Low tech bikes that get the job done are less likely to disappear then the latest and greatest high-end bike. One reality of "bike as transportation" is that you need to leave it unattended. Big bike locks work but can be awkward - especially with quick release hubs and thieves can still make off with your saddle and other peripherals.

I own a wardrobe for cycling in Auckland. On wet rainy days I wear a Giro Chrono Expert jacket. In the winter, I add warm layers under this & in summer just my jersey. On my feet I wear cycling shoes with booties (shoe covers). I have a selection from windproof (thinner) to mid-winter neoprene (thick & warm). I wear gloves that range from fingerless (summer) to wind & waterproof (winter). I have a selection of arm, knee, leg, ear & head warmers to cover all seasons of wetter/colder weather from Autumn through to Spring. Unfortunately there’s no other option than to have a collection of cycling clothing, however this then sets you up to cover all conditions. I carry my rain jacket everyday, as living in Auckland you never know when it’ll rain!

Easy and cheap options like dry-fit wicking sports gear from K-mart or Warehouse. Rubberized elasticated work gloves from Bunnings or Mitre10 under $10. A light, breathable rain jacket from your hiking gear and maybe a light fleece on those rare days it drops below 10 centigrade. Leo is right about mudguards, I'd add a luggage rack and panniers to keep your back clear and breathable.

I used bicycle as my primary transportation in Norfolk VA for 8 years with public transport as my backup. My experience is similar to yours. I was fortunate to have shower facilities available at work and showered there each morning instead of may apartment. My commuter bike was the same bike I had bought 25 years earlier. Nothing fancy - steel molycrho frame, drop down shifters, and a few commuter add-ons. To reiterate a few things: 1. Bike rack and panniers to haul stuff to/from work and carry groceries home. 2. Good tires and innertubes - puncture resistant tubes, kevlar tires. 3. Rear view mirror! 4. Fenders to reduce grime from wet roads (because late day T-storms are pretty common there). 5. Route selection - better to add distance by using the roads least travelled then compete on the most direct and busiest routes. 6. BRIGHT lights and reflective vest when days get short between autumn and spring equinox. (A coworker confirmed that I was very visible on the dark, least travelled streets.) 7. Tire repair kit and pump/inflation cartridge and bus fare - just in case. (I lived along a bus route that served my workplace.)

Starting a new and finding my over the many proposed routes has driven up my time in the saddle.
Now finally cracked it! 30.54 miles round trip and hope to smash the 1 hour barrier soon.

Take care cycling in 30+ degrees severe dehydration can happen as it did to me. I cycled from Burwood to Belfast and many stops wherever I found shade drink water and help my heart stop racing. Vowed never to do it again, put my health in trouble lucky to make it home.
