East Lothian is a wonderful county for cycling - even if you're a bit of a novice or want to go out on a leisurely cycle with the family. It is mainly flat, not too hilly and the scenery is magnificent. If you are looking for more of a challenge, then follow the roads further inland where rolling countryside leads into the foothills of the Lammermuirs with wonderful views across the whole county.
East Lothian is compact too which makes it easier to visit many of the places of interest in one day. With quiet country lanes to explore, you can see for yourself the beautiful countryside on a bike and visit sites and attractions.
If off-road cycling is your thing, there are loads of great cycle trails to test your skills with exhilarating routes through the countryside.
This ride takes you along a dismantled railway line between the East Lothian towns of Haddington and Longniddry. The route runs for about 5 miles along a nice flat path so suitable for new riders. It starts on the western side of Haddington near to the East Lothian Community Hospital. You then head north-west passing Merryhatton Cottages, the Cotty Burn and Setonhill Wood before coming into Longniddry where the route finishes at the train station. In Longniddry cthere is a lovely little cafe for some post ride refreshments. They have a good range of meals and snacks and a pretty garden area to relax in if the weather is fine. You can find the cafe at 12 Main Street, Longniddry, EH32 0NF.
Alternatively, why not ride the Pencaitland Railway Path? A lovely trail that is mainly flat, it follows the old Pencaitland Railway. You could go from Crossgatehall before turning around and following the same route back. The terrain is a well surfaced wide and level path, great for biking. The hedgerows, burns and woodland along the route are habitats for a variety of wildlife and rare flowers so keep you eyes peeled along the way for interesting sights.
