What do we want to achieve?

We want more people to experience first-hand how easy and enjoyable riding a bike can be. That's why the aim of the challenge is to encourage as many people as we can to ride a bike.

What is the Aotearoa Bike Challenge?

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge is a free, fun competition to see who can get the most people to ride a bike. Teams will earn points for riding and for recruiting new members. The competition is based primarily on numbers of staff taking part, but points will also be awarded for the number of trips taken and distance ridden.

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge aims to get more people cycling more often, whether that is for fun, exercise or to work.

Imagine if more people rode bikes in New Zealand - our air would be cleaner, our cities would be more peaceful and our streets would be safer.

Studies have shown that places with higher numbers of riders have fewer accidents per rider: increased participation leads to greater visibility and awareness and makes bicycling safer for everyone.

Who can take part?

Anyone who lives in New Zealand is eligible for prizes.

What counts as a bike ride?

A 10 minute ride on a pedal bike (including electric bikes).

Rides on motorcycles, scooters or stationary cycles (including smart trainers) are not eligible.

Why just 10 minutes?

You're welcome to ride for more than 10 minutes, most people do. However, 10 minutes is an achievable goal for someone who hasn't ridden a bike in years. It's also just enough to leave a big smile on your face, which is exactly what we're trying to achieve.

I already ride to work, why should I take part and record my ride?

We need your help to spread your love of cycling and enlist your friends and colleagues. Your experience can help those thinking about riding a bike to take the all-important step.

By recording your rides, you are providing a record of cycling which can be used to argue for and justify funding for improved cycling infrastructure.

How do I classify as a new rider?

When you register for the Challenge, you will tell us how often you have ridden a bike in the last 12 months. Those who haven't ridden at all in the last 12 months are classified as 'new riders'.

How do I win a prize?

You'll be entered into our prize draw once you log a ride (and have visited the site in the last 2 months).

How do I know if I've won a prize?

We'll be in touch to let you know if you win a prize.
