What do we want to achieve?

We want more people to experience first-hand how easy and enjoyable riding a bike can be. That's why the aim of the challenge is to encourage as many people as we can to ride a bike.

Why Take part?

  • Fun!
  • Free

It will bring a smile to your face and make the world a better place!

And you and your team can win some great prizes!

What is the Auckland Bike Challenge?

The Auckland Bike Challenge is a free, fun competition to see who can get the most people to ride a bike. The competition is based on percentage not distance so encouraging the most number of staff to log a ride increases your teams percentage.

The Auckland Bike Challenge aims to get more people cycling more often, whether that is for fun, exercise or to work.

Imagine if more people cycled in Auckland - our city would be cleaner, our neighbourhoods would be more peaceful and our streets would be safer.

Studies have shown that places with higher numbers of riders have fewer accidents per rider: increased participation leads to greater visibility and awareness and makes cycling safer for everyone.

Who can take part?

Anyone who lives in Auckland is eligible for prizes.

What counts as a bike ride?

A 10 minute ride on a pedal bike (including electric bikes).

Rides on motorcycles, scooters or stationary cycles are not eligible.

Why just 10 minutes?

You're welcome to cycle for more than 10 minutes, most people do. However, 10 minutes is an achievable goal for someone who hasn't ridden a bike in years. It's also just enough to leave a big smile on your face, which is exactly what we're trying to achieve.

I already ride to work, why should I take part and record my ride?

We need your help to spread your love of cycling and enlist your friends and colleagues. Your experience can help those thinking about riding a bike to take the all-important step.

By recording your rides, you are providing a record of cycling which can be used to argue for and justify funding for improved cycling infrastructure.

How do I classify as a new rider?

When you register for the Challenge, you will tell us how often you have ridden a bike in the last 12 months. Those who haven't ridden at all in the last 12 months are classified as 'new riders'.

How do I win a prize?

There are three ways of winning individual prizes:

  1. Simply participating - register and log 1 ride during the Challenge to go into the draw.
  2. Logging rides - the more rides you log... the more chances you have of winning some great prizes!
  3. Log rides to work - extra prize entry every time you ride your bike to work or part of the journey e.g to the bus or train station.

How do I know if I've won a prize?

Check the prizes page on the website. We'll be in touch to let you know if you win a prize.
