🌈 Happy Pride Month from all of us at Love to Ride! This guest article is written by Zach Butcher, Chair of Rainbow Riders – a vibrant LGBTQIA+ cycling group based in Greater Manchester. Whether you're new to cycling or just finding your footing as an LGBTQIA+ rider, this guide is full of encouragement and practical tips to help you feel confident and connected on two (or more) wheels!
Starting cycling as an LGBTQIA+ rider can feel like a daunting challenge – a mix of excitement and nervousness, especially if you’re not sure where you fit in. I’ve been there. It’s easy to feel like cycling is for “serious” people with flashy bikes and tiny shorts—but that’s nonsense. If you ride, you’re a cyclist, and we believe everyone should have the freedom to ride as their full, authentic self. End of story.
The good news? You’re not alone, and there’s a whole rainbow of riders out there cheering you on.
So whether you’re dusting off an old bike or polishing a full carbon frame, cycling solo or thinking about joining your first group ride, here are a few things I’ve learned that might help you find your confidence and your community on two wheels.
It is easy to feel out of place when you're just starting out, especially if you don’t see others like you around. But the truth is: there’s no one "type" of cyclist. Whether you’re rocking Lycra, baggy shorts, glitter and sequins, cleats or trainers, pedal power or electric assist – your ride is valid. You deserve safe, joyful spaces to move your body, explore the city and green spaces and connect with others.
Confidence grows with time - and miles. Start with short, familiar routes: around your neighbourhood, through your local park, or along a canal path. In Manchester, the Fallowfield Loop, Bridgewater Canal, and even routes through Alexandra Park are great low-stress starting points.
Build your confidence one pedal stroke at a time. If traffic makes you anxious – and we’ve all been there – ride during quieter hours, plan your route in advance, or buddy up with someone experienced if you can.
The best part of cycling for me has always been the people. Riding with an LGBTQIA+ or inclusive group can transform the whole experience. You’re not just out for exercise—you’re part of something bigger.
Look for LGBTQIA+ cycling groups like Rainbow Riders or inclusive clubs in your area. Many of us started unsure, too, but we found joy in riding together. Whether you’re fast or slow, new or experienced, nervous or curious — there’s a place for you at our starting line.
Everyone was new once. Everyone had a “first ride”. Everyone has been the person Googling how to fix a puncture at some point. Don’t be shy about asking what to bring on a ride, how to dress for the weather, or what snacks work best (answer: all of them).
You’ll find that most riders are more than happy to share what they’ve learned — and you’ll soon have your own tips to pass on before long.
Every ride counts—your first ride, your first time clipping in without falling over, your first hill, your first group ride. Even your first time turning up when you didn’t quite feel like it. Celebrate those moments. They’re proof of your growth.
Take pride in your progress. You’re doing something brilliant for your mental and physical wellbeing, and for visibility in the cycling world.
We’re proud to be part of a growing movement making cycling safer, queerer, and more joyful in a world that doesn’t always make room for queerness.
If you’re in or near Manchester and looking for a chilled, inclusive group to ride with, Rainbow Riders runs regular social rides with all-levels welcome. No judgment, no drop, no gatekeeping — just good people and good vibes on bikes.

If you’re not in Manchester, check out local LGBTQ+ or women/non-binary cycling collectives. You might be surprised how many are out there—and how welcoming they are:
