How can I connect my profile with Strava?

If you use Strava to record your rides, you can link it with your Love to Ride account so that your rides are automatically logged on your profile. During a challenge, this means you'll get entered into prize drawings automatically - how great is that?! 😃

To get started syncing your rides from Strava just follow these simple steps 👇

1. Log onto Strava on your device if you aren't already

That's it, you're done!

Now when you use Strava to track your rides, you'll see them turn up on your Love to Ride profile within 24 hours of being saved.

Bonus tip 🚴‍♂️

You can use the 'commute' tag in Strava before you save your ride and it will automatically show as 'transport to or from work' on your Love to Ride profile.

Privacy note

When you connect your Strava account with Love to Ride, a link to your Strava profile will be publicly visible next to your rides on Love to Ride. Anyone can click on this and will be taken to your Strava profile on the Strava website. The privacy settings on your Strava account will determine what information is accessible via this link. If you would like to maintain your privacy, we suggest you familiarise yourself with Strava's privacy settings.

Why aren't my Strava rides showing up?

Click here to find out how to set up your connection with Strava if you haven't already.

Click on the links below to jump to a specific section, or read on!

Are your rides indoor rides?

Indoor rides cannot be synced from Strava.

Depending on where you live, you may or may not be allowed to log indoor rides on Love to Ride. Generally, these are not allowed on our site, but we have removed this restriction for users in some areas.

Indoor rides will need to be logged manually if you live in a country where we are temporarily allowing them.

Why do indoor rides not normally count?

Did you log it less than 24 hours ago?

The connection with Strava doesn't always transfer rides instantly - when our site is experiencing high volumes of traffic there can be a delay.

⌛️ Please allow up to 24 hours for your ride to appear. If after this time your ride still hasn't synced across, try another solution below.

Just connected and looking for rides from more than 30 days ago?

When you connect your account with Strava, we only get access to the past 30 days of data. If you want to log your rides from before this, you will need to add them manually.

Are your rides private?

1. Head to www.strava.com and click on 'Privacy Controls' in the left menu bar

2. Make sure that the privacy settings for your rides are set to either 'Everyone' or 'Followers' in the Activities section, as shown below 👇

If not, they will not sync across.

A screenshot showing Strava's privacy control settings as set to 'everyone' or 'followers'

Do you have multiple accounts?

If none of the above points fix the problem, then the other option is that you might have more than one Strava account.

Have a look and try to find out if you have multiple Strava profiles with different email addresses. If you might, follow the steps below. 👇

1. Visit your Profile settings on Love to Ride and disconnect from Strava

A screenshot highlighting the 'settings' button on a user profile

A screenshot showing the 'disconnect from strava' button on user settings

2. Go to www.strava.com and log out of your old account (the one you aren't using)

3. Go back to your Love to Ride Profile settings and reconnect with Strava using the correct Strava account

You should now be connected with the correct Strava account and your rides should come across in the next 24 hours. 🙌

Why aren’t my MapMyRide rides showing up?

First, make sure that your Love to Ride profile is correctly linked to your MapMyRide profile. You can see if it’s connected in your Profile settings.

A screenshot highlighting the where it shows if you are connected to MayMyRide in user settings

If it says ‘Connected’ and your rides are still not appearing...

Please disconnect from MapMyRide and then connect it again. This should update the permissions to make sure it’s up to date. Please wait 24 hours for your MapMyRide rides to appear.

Still not syncing after 24 hours?

Your rides have to be publicly available in MapMyRide for us to be able to sync them across to your Love to Ride profile. Follow the below steps to make sure they can sync.

1. Open the MapMyRide app

2. Go to Settings

3. Click ‘Privacy’

4. Set Route Sharing to ‘Friends’ or ‘Everyone’

5. Set Workout sharing to ‘Friends’ or ‘Everyone’

Your recent MapMyRide bike rides should then begin syncing to Love to Ride over the next 24 hours.

What is a ride for transportation?

A ride for transportation is any journey you do on your bicycle for the primary purpose of getting to or from somewhere. This could include riding to the store, to visit a friend, to the library etc. To log a ride for transportation, select ‘transport to or from other destination’ when you log a ride manually on the website.

A ride ‘to or from a meeting’ will also count as a ride for transportation, however there is a separate ride type for commutes to work (more on that below!). Together, your rides to/from work and your rides to other destinations contribute to your CO2 savings and your number of transport trips. Find out more about how we calculate the CO2 here. You can edit a trip’s purpose after logging it. More on that here!

What counts as a commute?

All rides marked as rides ‘to/from work’ count as commutes. Rides to/from other destinations should be logged under the ‘transport to/from other destination’ trip purpose.

Individual Top Commuter leaderboards count the total number of days on which you have logged a ride ‘to/from work’ during the campaign period.

The same applies on the Group leaderboards for ‘Most Commute Days’. All Group members' rides ‘to/from work’ are totaled.

Find out how to choose your trip purpose, or how to edit it.

Do indoor rides count?

In general, no, indoor rides cannot be logged on Love to Ride. In some cities and regions, we are temporarily allowing indoor rides to be logged manually on the site. This is due to a variety of factors, including forest fires making the air outside not always safe to ride in, and the Coronavirus pandemic.

If indoor rides are an available option in your area, you will see ‘indoor ride’ as an option in the dropdown ‘ride purpose’ menu when logging a ride.

Why indoor riding doesn’t normally count...

Our mission is to get more people riding bicycles - to get from A to B, to enjoy time outside, and to improve our mental and physical health and wellbeing.

A lot of our programs aim to encourage ‘new riders’ to experience what it’s like to ride a bike out in the world and give them a positive riding experience. These short rides can be powerful experiences that help to change people’s perceptions and beliefs about riding a bike. If we allowed people to ride a stationary bike to take part in our programs, then many people would simply ride a stationary bike instead of heading outdoors, and fewer people would have this transformative experience.

While we know that riding a stationary bike can bring a lot of health benefits, our mission and our funding typically has a wider remit than health alone. Also, when physical activity is baked into your everyday activities (e.g. your commute to work is active because you bike or walk), it’s much easier to get your recommended level of physical activity as opposed to carving out time in a busy schedule to work out.

The exception to this rule is if you have a disability that means you can’t ride a bicycle but are able to ride on an indoor stationary bike. In this case we welcome you to participate in all our programs and campaigns on your stationary bike and log the rides you do on the Love to Ride site as fun/fitness.

Please note that indoor rides cannot be synced from Strava or MapMyRide and will need to be logged manually.

Can I connect my training device with Love to Ride?

Currently, Love to Ride is only set up to connect with Strava and MapMyRide. If you use a training device to track your rides, there is a good chance you can connect this with Strava, which can then sync to your Love to Ride profile. Find out more about syncing with Strava here.

Can I log e-bike rides?

Yes! You're welcome to log e-bike rides. E-bikes make riding a bike more accessible as they can minimize some barriers (such as tricky hills and long distances) and that helps us achieve our goal of getting more people riding outside.

Can I take part using an adaptive bike?

Yes, Love to Ride is open to everyone, whatever their ability or type of bike. Because riders have varying abilities, there are many different variations of adaptive cycles.

Read more about these options on the Move United website.

How do I choose the trip purpose?

When you log a ride, you’ll be asked to select a trip purpose. Simply choose one from the dropdown menu and it will be saved as such!

If you use Strava, then you can tag your ride as 'Commute' before saving and it will automatically come across as ‘transport to/from work’ on your Love to Ride profile.

Note: If you update your Strava ride with the ‘Commute’ tag after saving it, this will not come across as ‘to/from work’ and will need to be edited manually on Love to Ride.

Want to edit the purpose after logging your ride? More info below.

How do I edit the trip purpose?

If you want to change the trip purpose after you've logged it, here's how.

Note: It is not currently possible to set a 'default' trip purpose.

1. Head to your profile page

Go to lovetoride.net and make sure you are logged in. Go to your Profile Page by clicking on your name in the top right, or clicking on the 'Me' tab at the top of the page.

Note: These steps will not work if you are using the mobile app. Please select 'view full profile' to open your profile in a mobile browser, or click here.

2. Find your rides

Scroll down until you see the 'Rides' section on the right-hand side that looks like the image below.👇 (This is not the same as the activity feed - keep scrolling!)

3. Click on the pencil icon next to the ride you want to edit

4. Click the arrow on the right to open a drop-down menu, select your new trip purpose, and click 'Save'

A screenshot highlighting how to save the trip purpose

Note: It is currently only possible to edit the trip purpose. If you want to edit the distance or date, you will need to delete the ride and log it again with the correct details.

Who is a New Rider?

When someone joins the site they fill out a short survey. Everyone is then designated as a New Rider, Occasional Rider, or Regular Rider based on the information they provide during that survey. New Riders are folks who've ridden only a few times or not at all in the last 12 months before registering.

How are the leaderboards audited?

During a campaign (and always before any challenge results are announced) the leaderboards are audited to ensure that the results are accurate. We are always keeping an eye out and will review any rides that don’t look quite right. Please support us to run a fair and fun competition by logging your rides honestly and letting us know if you notice anything suspicious. Just email support@lovetoride.net with a link to the profile and we’ll look into it.

Questions about riding data

How can I see my riding stats?

There are two places to see your personal riding stats.

1. In the box at the top of your Profile Page

A screenshot highlighting the dropdown menu at the top of the stats box on a user profile

This is where you’ll find your ‘at-a-glance’ stats. You can specify the time period or campaign you’d like to view your stats for by clicking on the little white arrow highlighted in the image above and choosing from the dropdown menu.

2. The ‘Graph your stats’ function at the bottom of your Profile Page

For a visual representation, you can graph your stats for specified time periods and metrics and compare them to the previous year. You can also use this feature to graph your workplace’s stats.

A screenshot of the 'graph my stats' section of a user profile

How is the amount of CO2 calculated?

The figure for the amount of CO2 saved relates to trips that have been logged for transport purposes only. The statistic relates to the total amount of CO2 released by an average car, of unknown fuel type, which roughly estimates the amount of CO2 saved by cycling instead of driving. It is calculated as follows:

Total units traveled x kg CO2 per unit = total kg CO2

This calculation is the total distance of trips logged for transport purposes multiplied by the amount of CO2 released by an average car, which equals the total kilograms of CO2 per mile.

DEFRA's carbon conversion factor for an average car fuel unknown was used. This is 0.29143kg CO2 per mile (0.18109kg of CO2 per kilometre) is provided in 'Greenhouse gas reporting: conversion factors 2017’.

Questions about Workplace Profiles

How can my workplace take part?

You can create a Workplace Profile that will be the online bike riding community and encouragement platform for your co-workers. Workplace Profiles are available for those who:

a. live or work in an area that is funded by the local authority

AND/OR

b. have a Love to Ride for Business plan for their workplace

Find out how to join or create your Workplace Profile here.

How can I join my workplace?

Do you want to...

a. join a workplace that already has a Love to Ride profile?

b. set up your Workplace Profile from scratch?

Join a workplace that already has a Love to Ride profile

1. Head to your Profile Page (you need to be registered with a Rider Profile and logged in - register here if you don't have one yet)

2. Click on 'Join a workplace' under your name

A screenshot highlighting the 'join an organization' link on a user profile

3. Type in the name of your workplace and click 'Search'

4. Find your workplace on the list and click on it to register

Organizations are workplaces that have multiple sites (e.g. Love to Ride has sites in Bristol, Atlanta etc.). If you click on the organization, you will be asked which local workplace you want to join (i.e the local site ,e.g Love to Ride - Bristol).

If you cannot find your workplace, find out how to set it up here.

The quickest way to join the correct workplace is to select it in the 'Workplaces near me' section.

Setting up your workplace from scratch

If you're the first of your co-workers to join Love to Ride, welcome! 👋 🎉 You will need to set up your Workplace Profile. Don't worry - it's really easy.

1. Head to your Profile Page

2. Check that your workplace doesn't already have a profile

It can get complicated when multiple Workplace Profiles are set up by mistake. Follow step 3 above to search any possible names for your workplace before setting up a new one. If you can't find one, read on.

3. Select 'Register your local workplace'

A screenshot highlighting the 'register your local workplace' link

4. Choose one of the options for 'my organization has...'

5. Type in the name of your workplace

Be sure to include anything that your co-workers might search for, e.g. if you use an acronym, include this in brackets after the full name. This will help your co-workers find your Workplace Profile when they sign up, e.g. 👇

A screenshot showing an organization called 'Tourism Holdings Limited' showing up when you search for 'THL' because it includes 'THL' at the end of the name

6. Choose your industry from the dropdown menu and click 'Next'

7. Fill out the details for your workplace

It is important that the address is accurate as this will ensure that you see local content and make sure your workplace is eligible for local campaigns.

The workplace staff count must include ALL full or part-time paid staff at this site, not only those who usually ride.

You can exclude co-workers who are on maternity leave, long-term sick leave, sabbatical, other long-term leave, or based outside of the country for the full duration of the challenge period. Read more information about who to include in the staff count here.

Please ensure the workplace staff count is as accurate as possible. If you aren't sure, please reach out to a member of staff who can tell you this. You can make an estimate to set up the Workplace Profile and then update it later with the correct number. (Find out how to do that here.)

That's it! You will now see your workplace on your Profile Page 👇

A screenshot showing where your workplace will show on your profile

You will be automatically made the Champion. If you want to change who the Champion is, follow these steps.

If you don't work, or have left your workplace, you can register as an individual. Find out how.

Who can join my workplace on Love to Ride?

To make it as fair as possible, workplaces and departments should only compete with workplaces/departments that are of a similar size to them, therefore it’s essential that the staff numbers we have are correct.

  • Please count everyone who is employed (part-time or full-time) during the event period. Challenges are specifically for you and your co-workers and so this doesn’t include students where they may exist.
  • If your workplace has students, we encourage you to set up a Club/Group for them. We want your students to sign-up their own employers and work to encourage their co-workers there to start riding too.
  • You can only exclude co-workers in your staff count who are on maternity leave, long-term sick leave, sabbatical, other long-term leave, or based outside of the challenge area (e.g. the country for a national challenge or city for a city-wide challenge etc.) for the full duration of the event period.

How do I create a new department (non-Champions)?

Having departments is a great way to create some competition within your workplace. It’s simple to set up a new department.

Note: Departments should not be different sites - they should be departments within one workplace site, such as Marketing, Paediatrics, or Maintenance etc. Find out how to set up an Workplace Profile here.

1. Go to your Profile Page

2. Click on the pencil icon next to your workplace

A screenshot highlighting the pencil icon to edit your workplace on a user profile

3. Click ‘Register a new department’ below the dropdown menu

a screenshot showing 'register a new department' link

4. Fill out the department name and total department staff count

5. Click ‘Create’ - that’s it! You will be automatically added to this department

Find out how to switch departments here.

How can I change a department’s Champion?

Just like Workplace Profiles, Department Profiles have a Champion. The person who set up the Department Profile will automatically be assigned as the Champion at first. If you’d like to change this, the current Department Champion can do so by clicking on the ‘Edit Department’ button below the profile picture, choosing the new Champion from the dropdown list, and clicking ‘Update Department’ at the bottom to save.

How can I leave a workplace or register without one?

If you have left your workplace or you don't work, you can register as an individual.

Although some of our challenges feature competition between workplaces, you can absolutely participate if you don't work, work independently, or are retired. 🙂

If you have never been registered with a workplace on Love to Ride, then you don't need to do anything apart from select 'register as an individual' when you first sign up.

If you are currently registered with a workplace but want to leave it, follow these simple steps. 👇

1. Head to your Workplace Profile

2. Find the panel on the right-hand side that looks something like this:

Screenshot showing panel for inviting co-workers and leaving workplace

3. Click on 'Leave workplace' and confirm in the pop-up

If you are your workplace's Champion, you will be asked to allocate a new Champion before leaving.

Note: If you can't see the panel on the right-hand side of your Workplace Profile, you can leave/change your workplace by going to your Rider Profile and clicking on the pencil icon next to your workplace listing (under your name). Then select 'register as an individual' to take part without a workplace.

You can then either join a new workplace or continue to ride without one. If you do happen to ride as a member of a Club/Group then you can join one of those on Love to Ride. Find out more about Clubs/Groups here. If not, keep on riding, and we look forward to seeing you racking up the miles! 🚲

How can I change my workplace’s Champion?

If it's time for somebody else to take the reins, it's really easy to change your workplace's Champion.

Note: There can currently only be one Champion per workplace.

1. Go to your Workplace Profile by clicking on it on your Profile Page

A screenshot highlighting where the workplace is shown on a user profile

2. Click on the 'Change Champion' button, select the new Champion from the list, and complete the reason for the change (e.g. 'No longer works here')

A screenshot highlighting the 'change champion' link on a workplace profile

This will then need to be approved by the Love to Ride team. Once that is done, the new Champion will be updated.

Why can't I see my workplace on the leaderboard?

ďťżIf your workplace is in the cycling industry, it will not show on the leaderboard by default.

We separate out workplaces in the cycling industry to keep them together on a specific cycling industry leaderboard. This is to keep the competition accessible for workplaces in other industries. Otherwise, cycling workplaces would frequently claim the top spots, which would be discouraging for other workplaces.

ďťżďťżYou can see your position by filtering the 'all industries' leaderboard by 'cycling industry'.

If your workplace is not in the cycling industry and you can’t see it, please get in touch with our Support team by emailing support@lovetoride.net with as much information as possible.

Questions for Champions

What admin rights do Champions have?

Champions aren't just there to look good (although they do 😉 ). The Champion is the person with the power to keep everything up to date and looking great on the Workplace Profile ✨

As a Champion, you can...

How can Champions add content to the Info tab?

The Info tab on your Workplace Profile is designed as a hub for your Champion to share any riding related information with all co-workers. Whether it's information about bike parking at your workplace, details about your cycle to work scheme, help accessing a bike, upcoming biking-related events, or anything else, this is where it's at!

1. Go to your Workplace Profile and click on 'Edit Workplace' underneath the logo

A screenshot showing the location of the 'edit workplace' button

2. Click on 'Info tab' at the top

A screenshot showing the location of the info tab on a workplace profile

3. Type in the information you want to share on your Workplace Profile and click on 'Update Messageboard' to save

Note: Everything you share in the Info section will be publicly visible (including for people not associated with your Workplace Profile) unless you choose to hide it from people outside your workplace. Find out how to do that below.

How can Champions hide the Info tab from people outside of the workplace?

If you only want those associated with your Workplace Profile to see the content you add to the Info tab, you can easily change the settings to do this.

1. Go to your Workplace Profile and click on 'Edit Workplace' underneath the logo

A screenshot showing the location of the 'edit workplace' button

2. Scroll down and check the box that says 'Info tab visible to co-workers only'

3. Remember to click on 'save changes' at the bottom, and you're done!

How do Champions edit and confirm the workplace staff count?

During workplace challenges, your workplace will compete against others of a similar size. You will be placed in the correct size category according to your staff count. It's the Champion's job to make sure that the staff count is correct so that you compete on the correct leaderboard.

Before the challenge starts, Champions should:

1. Check the staff count is correct (see who should be included here)

2. Edit the staff count if necessary

3. Confirm the staff count

Where can I see the staff count?

Head to your Workplace Profile and find the stats at the top. The below image shows where you can see the staff count. In this example, the total staff count is 9, so Love to Ride - Bristol will compete on the 7-19 staff size leaderboard.

A screenshot showing the staff count of the Love to Ride office on their profile

Who should be included in the staff count?

To make it as fair as possible, workplaces and departments should only compete with workplaces/departments that are of a similar size to them, therefore it’s essential that the staff numbers we have are correct.

  • Please count everyone who is employed (part-time or full-time) during the event period
  • You can only exclude co-workers in your staff count who are on maternity leave, long-term sick leave, sabbatical, other long-term leave, or based outside of the challenge area (e.g. the country for a national challenge or city for a city-wide challenge etc.) for the full duration of the event period
  • If you work at a school, your Workplace Profile should only include staff - students may create a club/group

How to edit and confirm the staff count

1. Head to your Workplace Profile

2. Click on 'Edit Workplace' below the logo

A screenshot showing the 'edit workplace' button on a Workplace Profile

4. In the third box down, enter the correct staff count

A screenshot showing where to enter the staff count in the workplace settings

5. Check the box at the bottom of the page to confirm the staff count

Note: Once this box has been checked, it can't be reversed, so make sure you have double-checked beforehand. If there will be changes in numbers due to staff joining or leaving, remember to make allowances for this.

How can Champions set up a new Department Profile?

There's nothing like a bit of departmental competition to get everyone fired up and ready to ride! It's easy to set up Department Profiles within your Workplace Profile, just follow these steps. 👇

Note: Any staff member can create new Department Profiles unless the Champion disables this option. Find out how to do that here.

1. Go to your Workplace Profile and click on 'Edit workplace' below the profile picture to go to your settings

How can Champions prevent new Department Profiles from being set up?

Sometimes, if multiple staff members set up Department Profiles, it can get a little complicated. If you'd like to prevent new departments from being set up, here's how.

1. Go to your workplace settings by clicking on 'Edit workplace' below the profile picture on your Workplace Profile

2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and check the box next to 'Do not allow department registrations'

3. Click on 'Update organization' at the bottom to save changes

How do Champions remove people from their Workplace Profile?

If somebody is registered with a workplace but no longer works there, Champions can remove them.

If you remove someone from your Workplace or Organization Profile, they will still keep their personal profile but will no longer be associated with your workplace or organization.

Just follow these simple steps to tidy up your staff list 👇

1. Head to your Workplace Profile

2. Scroll down until you see the ‘Workplace Members’ section

3. Click on the ‘X’ next to the person you’d like to remove from your workplace

A screenshot highlighting the 'X' symbol for deleting people from an office profile

Note: During a challenge, there will be an additional ‘Team Members’ section. The people on this list are those who are riding and earning points for your workplace during the challenge. You can follow the same process to remove team members from your workplace. 👇

How can Champions send messages to all their co-workers?

When a Champion sends a message to their Workplace Profile, all staff members get an email notification. Stay in touch and remind your co-workers to log those rides!

Just follow these 3 simple steps…

1. Head to your Workplace or Organization Profile

If your workplace is part of a larger organization (e.g. you work for the Seattle office of a national company that has a Love to Ride profile), you can choose whether you want to message just your workplace or the entire organization.

2. Find the ‘Message your team’ box on the right-hand side

A screenshot highlighting the 'Message your team' box on an office or organization profile

3. Type your message in the box and click ‘Send Message’

All messages sent to your workplace/organization will show up underneath this box. As well as receiving an email notification, your co-workers will be able to see your message when they go to your profile.

Questions about Clubs/Groups

What is a 'Club/Group'?

It can be a cycling club, a group of friends, or a social riding group you are a part of.

Clubs/Groups are different from 'Workplaces Profiles'. If you are a group of employees, you should create a Workplace Profile instead. Find out how to do that here.

However, if you are a group of people associated with a workplace, but you are not all employees of the workplace, then a Club/Group is the perfect option. For example, if you are a group of employees plus other associated folks who are not employed there (e.g. board members, family and friends, etc.), you should create a Club/Group rather than a Workplace Profile.

Clubs/Groups do not compete based on points during challenges, and can be used year-round, including outside of specific challenges and campaigns.

A Club/Group is different from a 'Team'. Teams are specifically for Team challenges, and will earn points and compete on the Team leaderboards.

How do I join a Club/Group on Love to Ride?

1. After you register, head to your Profile Page click on 'Join a Club/Group'

A screenshot highlighting the 'join a club/group' link on a user profile

2. You'll have two options:

A screenshot showing the options to join an existing Club/Group or to register a new one

  • Click on 'Register a Club/Group' if you are the first and your Club/Group has not yet been set up on Love to Ride. You can then fill in the information and click 'Create'.
  • Click on 'Join existing' if another member has already set it up. You can then use the search bar to find your Club/Group. See below for an example.

A screenshot showing the search bar for finding an existing Club/Group

Can you be in more than one Club/Group?

Yes! There is no limit to the number of Clubs/Groups you can be a member of.

If you are already a member of a Club/Group, you can join another by clicking on the '+' symbol next to the name of your Club/Group on your profile.

A screenshot highlighting the '+' symbol next to the workplace on a user profile

How many people can be in a Club/Group?

There is no limit to how many people can be in a Club/Group - the more the merrier! You can filter by group size on the leaderboard to see how you're doing compared to similar-sized groups.

A screenshot showing how to filter the leaderboard by group size

How do I invite people to join my Club/Group?

You can invite people to your group by sending them the website address of your group's profile page or clicking on 'invite people' button on the right-hand side of your Club/Group Profile.

A screenshot showing where to find the invite button

Note: The 'Invite by email' link will open up your mailing app. If you do not have a mailing app installed, you can send the direct hyperlink to your Club/Group profile instead (just copy and paste it from the address bar when you are on your Club/Group Profile Page).

I don't have a Club/Group but I want to join one

Riding with others can be great fun and excellent motivation. If you'd like to find a club to ride with, we recommend doing a quick Google search for cycling/biking clubs in your area. If you find one, you can then see if they have a Club/Group Profile on Love to Ride by searching their name (more info here). If not, you can follow the steps above to set one up and invite the other members to join!

Questions about Teams

What is a Team?

You can join a Team during a Team challenge to compete together against other Teams on the leaderboard. Unlike a Club/Group or a Workplace Profile, which can be used year-round, a Team Profile only exists during a Team challenge. After the challenge is over, the Team will no longer be available. Find out more about Clubs/Groups here.

What is a Team challenge?

During a Team challenge, you can create your own Team and engage in friendly competition by riding your bike. You are invited to form a Team and, over the challenge period, you’ll earn points and compete against other Teams by riding your bikes and encouraging others to saddle up as well. You will be able to see where your Team sits on the leaderboards, and those who log their rides will be entered into prize drawings for some amazing prizes!

How can I join a Team?

Before a Team challenge starts, you will be invited to register for the challenge and create or join a Team.

Note: Remember, Teams only exist during a Team challenge. If you want a hub for you and your fellow riders to connect socially all year round, you could create a Club/Group instead.

  1. When registrations for the challenge are open, you will see a pop-up when you go to your Profile Page which invites you to click ‘I’m in’. Click on this and you will be registered for the challenge.
  2. You’ll be asked to confirm that your details are correct so that we can be sure we have the correct contact details for you. Check this over, make any necessary updates and click on ‘Done’ to save.
  3. You will then be invited to create or join a Team.

If you skipped this step when you registered for the challenge, you can join a Team later on by heading to your Profile Page and clicking on ‘Join a Team' under your name.

Screenshot showing the 'join a team' button on a rider profile

If you have been invited to join a Team:

1. Select ‘Join an existing Team’ and search for the Team name

2. Click on the Team you want to join and you’re ready to get going!

If you want to start a Team and invite others to join:

1. Select ‘Start your own Team’ and fill out the Team name and description. If you want to affiliate your Team with a Workplace Profile, you can also choose this option here.

2. Select ‘Create Team’ and that’s it! You will automatically be made the Team Captain. If you want to change the Captain, you can do this in the settings of your Team Profile.

Note: Some riders will not be able to start their own Team, and can only be part of a Team if they are invited by another rider. Whether or not you are able to start your own Team depends on whether you have access to premium features of Love to Ride. Find out more here.

Who can be in my Team?

Whoever you like! You can invite friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, your dog walker - anyone you want to ride with! Just remember that there is a limit of 10 people per Team.

Why is there a limit of 10 people per Team?

For the Bike Month Challenge we’ve limited Teams to 10 riders. This helps create a level playing field on the leaderboards. A massive team of 100+ people would accrue a lot more points than a team of 10. Also, smaller groups = more accountability, and getting people biking in small teams of friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers is an ideal opportunity to build confidence and community.

How can my Club/Group or workplace take part if we have more than 10 members?

If you belong to a riding club or workplace with more than 10 people, you can create multiple Teams. You can ignite some friendly competition among the Teams or go for gold and each try to achieve a podium position in your pools’ leaderboards!

How can I invite people to join my Team?

To get as many people riding bikes as possible, it is best to try and fill your Team. You can invite up to 9 other riders to join your Team (10 people in total). There are a few ways to invite people:

1. Head to your Team Profile by clicking on ‘My Team’ on the top menu of the site. Scroll down until you see the button ‘Invite People’ below the Team leaderboard, click on this and choose to invite others via Facebook or email.

Screenshot showing location of 'log rides' and 'invite people' buttons on Team Profile

Please note that, if you do not have your browser settings set up to open your email client, the email button will not work. Try one of the other methods instead.

2. If you’re the Team Captain, you’ll get an email from us when someone joins your Team which contains a quick copy-and-paste message and a link to send out to other riders.

3. Copy and paste the URL from the address bar at the top of your browser page and send it to someone! When they click on the link, they’ll be taken to your Team Profile and they can simply click on the ‘Join Team’ button on the right-hand side.

screenshot showing the 'join team' and 'start my own team' buttons on the rider profile sidebar

What if I don't have 10 Team members?

That’s ok. You don’t have to have 10 members, but we do encourage you to invite 9 other people to join you so that you can all get the most out of the challenge! The more people you invite to your Team, the more happy people on bikes!

How do I remove someone from my Team?

Only the Team Captain can remove riders from the Team. If you spot someone who has accidentally joined your team, simply let your Captain know.

They can do this by going to the Team Profile, finding the list of Team members, and clicking on the red ‘x’ to the right of the name of the person to remove. That’s it!

Screenshot highlighting the Xs next to individual rider names on a Team Profile

Where can I see my Team’s activity and members?

Go to your Team Profile by clicking on ‘My Team’ in the top menu of the site. This is where you can see your riding stats, activity, points, position, and a list of your Team members. This is also where you can share photos and messages with your Team to help keep everyone motivated during the challenge!

Screenshot showing the 'my team' tab on the top navigation bar of the Love to Ride site

How can I change the Team Captain?

If you are the current Team Captain, you can assign a new Team Captain if you want someone else to take the helm. You can do this in the settings section of your Team Profile.  Be aware that, if you change the Captain, you will lose editing rights after you have saved your edits by clicking the ‘Edit Team’ button.

Can someone be a Team Captain of two Teams?

You can only be the Captain of one Team. However, if you want to cheer on multiple Teams at your workplace, you can message them via your Workplace Profile on Love to Ride.

Can I change my Team’s name?

Yes! If you are the Team Captain you can change your Team name, update the description, change your category, associate the Team with your workplace and locate your team in a region. Just go to the settings section on your Team Profile.

A screenshot showing the 'edit your team' section of a Team Profile

What if we want to combine Teams?

The best way to do this is to delete one Team and have each member move to the other Team. That way, one of the Teams remains in a pool and their new members can help their score. Remember that Teams are limited to 10 members. It is absolutely fine for Teams to grow their numbers once the challenge has begun. As always, the more the merrier!

What is a Pool?

A Pool is a mini-leaderboard of 10 Teams that will compete against each other during a Team challenge. All Teams will be automatically entered into a pool when the challenge starts.

Having Pools gives every team a real chance of getting a podium finish, thus helping to drive competition and motivation throughout the month.

How can I see who is in my Pool?

To see which Teams are in your Pool, just go to the Results tab at the top of the site and go to the ‘Team Results’ tab. In the Results section, you can see all the Pools, Teams, and Top Riders.

Screenshot showing the 'results' tab of the top navigation menu on the Love to Ride site

Can I choose which Teams are in my Pool?

No - Teams will be allocated a Pool automatically at the beginning of the challenge. A great opportunity to make some new biking friends and enjoy some friendly competition!

Questions about using the site

How do I switch between Love to Ride sites?

Each site you belong to on Love to Ride will show you information relevant to that community. For example, you can be a member of both the USA site and the Florida site.

On a computer:

1. Head to your profile and tap the cog in the top right corner

2. Under 'SWITCH SITE' select the site you want to view

A screenshot showing where the cog symbol can be found next to your name

On a mobile browser:

1. Tap the three horizontal lines on the top left to open the menu

2. Under 'SWITCH SITE' tap the site you want to view

A screenshot showing the menu on the Love to Ride app

How do I find my friends?

To protect riders’ privacy, we don’t have a user search feature. You can find folks by looking at the 'Workplaces' tab under the 'Results' tab and finding their workplace, then scrolling down to find them on the members list.

A screenshot showing the 'Results' tab of the Love to Ride site

Your friend can also send you a direct link to their profile for you to bookmark. If you want to keep track of your friends’ riding, we suggest creating a club/group so you can all easily see each others’ activity. Find out how to do that here.

How do I encourage somebody?

If you encourage someone to take part in a Love to Ride challenge, you are an encourager, and sometimes you can earn points for that!

The simplest way to be named as someone’s encourager is to use the ‘Invite Friends’ section of your Rider Profile to send them your unique invite link.

Click on the ‘Invite Friends’ tab on your Rider Profile and choose how you want to send your link. Or, just click on the ‘copy link’ button and paste it wherever you like!

If someone uses your link to register for a challenge, and goes on to log a ride during the challenge, you will automatically be named as their encourager and will earn encourager points! Now that’s simple.

⌛️Please note: If your points don't come across straight away, please give it 24 hours before contacting us. When the site is very busy, there can be a slight delay.

A screenshot showing the 'invite friends' button on a Rider Profile

How do I name someone as my encourager?

If somebody encouraged you to join a Love to Ride challenge, you can add them as your encourager. They'll be awarded the Encourager badge and, during some kinds of challenges, this will earn them points.

If you joined the challenge using someone’s unique invite link, you don’t need to do anything as they will automatically be named as your encourager (you can check on your Rider Profile - it will say the name of your encourager under your profile picture). If you didn’t use their link but they still encouraged you to ride during the challenge, there are a couple of ways to manually name them as your encourager.

🥇 Please note: you can only select one encourager per challenge (not one for every ride).

1. After logging your first ride during a challenge

When you log your first ride during a challenge manually on the website, you'll see this message 👇

A screenshot of the pop-up which asks who encouraged you to take part in a Love to Ride challenge. There is a box for entering in the name.

Simply enter the name of the person who encouraged you, select them from the list of search results, and the system will assign them as your encourager. 🎉

2. On your Rider Profile

If you normally sync your rides from another app (like Strava or MapMyRide), or you didn't choose an encourager when you logged your first ride, you can name your encourager on your Rider Profile.

Simply go to your Rider Profile and click on 'Add Encourager' underneath your profile picture. Type the name of the person who encouraged you, choose them from the list, et voila!

Note: This can only be done during a challenge.

Questions about using the app

How do I log in to the iOS app?

Currently, you can only use the 'Log in with Magic Link' option. Please type in the email address you normally use to log in to Love to Ride. You will then receive a 6-digit code by email. Use this code to log in.

Where is your Android app?

Our developers and Product team are currently working hard on developing an Android app for beta testing by our riders. Join the Android waitlist and we will let you know as soon as the app is ready.

What is automatic logging? What are the benefits?

Automatic logging is one of the key features of our new app. Once it's running, it will work in the background and identify when you're riding a bike. You don't have to do anything when you start or stop your ride. The app will log your rides automatically for you. How great is that?!

As a rider, you have a convenient solution that automatically logs your bike rides on the Love to Ride platform, enters you in prize drawings, and earns points for you during a challenge.

Automatic logging also ensures shorter rides are logged every time, because they are sometimes not logged with other apps. Rides from A to B, to get to the shops/work/university, etc., bring huge benefits for our health, our communities, and the planet. We are on a mission to enable more people to ride bikes comfortably from A to B. Using our app to learn how people ride helps us achieve that. We will be able to share insights in an aggregated (and anonymized) way with local authority partners and bike advocacy groups so they can plan and develop cycling infrastructure where it's needed the most.

How do I turn on automatic logging?

The app will remind and guide you through the process of turning on automatic logging.

You can turn on automatic logging under the 'More' tab or click the reminder that appears in the main 'Rides' tab:

Screenshot from the new Love to Ride mobile app for iphone displaying a reminder to turn on automatic ride logging

Once the feature is turned on, our app will be able to work in the background and automatically log when you ride a bike.

Why is the app not logging my rides automatically?

There are three things to check:

1. Check if Auto Logging is on.

You can check this under the 'More' tab. The 'Auto Logging' toggle needs to be switched on.

Automatic logging turned on

2. If Auto Logging is on...

Check that the app is running. The app only needs to be opened once to work in the background, but if you turn off your phone every night you will have to open our app in the morning to make sure it is ready to log your next ride.

3. Auto logging is on and the app is running, but still no rides picked up?

  1. Go to your general 'Settings' on your iPhone
  2. Open 'Privacy'
  3. Open 'Location Services'
  4. Find our app. It's called 'Love to Ride' (search 'ride' in your iPhone settings)
Love to Ride App

5. The Location setting should say 'Always'. If it says something else, click on 'Love to Ride' and choose 'Always' under 'Allow Location Access':

Love to Ride App - Location settings
Select 'Always' on in your settings

Next time you ride your bike it should be logged automatically :)

How do I report an inaccurate trip?

Something not recorded correctly? Click on the trip from the main 'Rides' tab and then click the menu button in the lower right corner. You can either click 'Not a bike ride?', 'Not walking/driving?', or 'Something else wrong' to report a trip, and our developers will take a look at it. Please describe what happened. E.g 'stopped at red light', 'rode my bike downhill on a smooth road', 'I was in a car moving slowly through traffic' etc. This will help us understand the context and improve it for future rides.

Screenshot from the app showing a map with a bike ride and options for verifying, deleting or reporting the trip

Does the app sync to my Love to Ride profile?

Yes! If you log into the app using Magic Link then your rides logged in the app will be linked to your usual Love to Ride Profile. There are some things to consider:

  • Sync occurs regularly but it can take up to 60 mins for your app and web profiles to align
  • You can use 3rd party apps to log your rides alongside the Love to Ride app. Our system will prioritize our own app, so you might not see rides from external apps on your Rider Profile. We've introduced this check to avoid rides being double-logged.
  • Occasionally, the app may incorrectly guess that a non-biking trip was a biking trip (or vice versa). If you've reviewed the trip in the app then this will sync. If you don't review, then your web profile will show the incorrectly predicted trip until it's updated or deleted. You can change the transport mode of the trip by editing it either within the app or on your web profile (click on the pencil icon next to the ride).

How do I log a manual ride?

The main feature of our new app is automatic logging, but if the app wasn't running in the background or if you simply don't want to use auto logging then you can log a manual ride.

If automatic logging is on:

  1. Go to the main Rides tab
  2. Find the 'X Other Trips' section and click 'View All':
    App - 1 Other Trip screenshot\
  3. You're now on the 'All Trips' screen, which shows non-bike trips too. Click the plus (+) icon in the upper right corner:
App All Trips screen with arrow indicating plus icon
  4. You can now log a manual ride:
Manually log ride screen in app

If automatic logging is off:

  1. Click on 'Record a Ride' on the main Rides tab to log a manual ride.
Auto logging off screen with arrow indicating record a ride button

My walk/car/train journey isn't tracked accurately

When the app thinks you're walking, driving a car, traveling by train, or using other non-bike modes, we don't turn on GPS in order to preserve battery life. You might see an imprecise zig-zag line on the map but that's okay for us, as we're only interested in biking data. It is however important that the app know what mode of transport you're using. So if you're out walking or driving a car and it gets identified as a bike ride, please report this and describe what happened.

My bike ride wasn't logged right from the start

The app will regularly check if you're moving by bike by reading accelerometer data. As soon as the app thinks you're riding a bike it will turn on GPS to log the ride accurately. To conserve battery life, however, the app doesn't check every second, so there is usually a slight delay before the app knows you've started riding and before it turns on GPS to log your exact route. The low-accuracy location points will be marked with a dashed line.

What is the dashed line at the start of the ride?

On the map, you will usually see your actual start location marked with a pin and then a dashed line up to the point where GPS was turned on. This is normally no more than a few hundred yards/meters. We expect the app to behave like this at the moment, but if the start location is further away or if the dashed line is over 0.5 miles, then please report it in the app and we will take a look.

Note, if you've stopped for a little bit then you might also see a dashed line after a break. This marks the point where we have processed and merged two sections together which the app initially thought were two separate rides.

Why isn't X feature there yet?

At the moment, our developers are working hard on the iOS app's core functionality as well as getting our Android app ready for public testing.

We want to get the app as accurate as possible at identifying bike rides and, once we're happy with this core functionality ,we will develop other features. We have several ideas on the roadmap and would love to hear yours too! You can reach us at product-team@lovetoride.net to let us know what you'd like to see.

I have an iPhone 6 (or earlier), can I install your iOS app?

Our app requires iOS 13 or higher, which means you need at least an iPhone 6S or iPhone SE (2nd gen). Standard iPhone 6 and older models can't install the app, unfortunately. We would have loved to offer the app for older models but the support plugin we use set these requirements.

How does the Heatmap work?

Where do you ride the most? How often do you use that secret shortcut during the morning rush? Where haven’t you explored by bike yet?

Get all the answers with our Heatmap feature. Every single bike ride you’ve logged with automatic logging is visible on the Heatmap. The more you’ve ridden in one place, the thicker the line. As you use the app you will begin to see thicker lines where you ride more frequently.

Example heatmap showing teal lines indicating bike rides on a dark grey map

Why isn't my ride on the Heatmap?

The Heatmap is not refreshed after every single bike ride, so there can sometimes be a little delay before it appears. If you have logged the ride with automatic logging, it will appear the next time your Heatmap is drawn. Bear with us - it will appear!

Rides logged in other apps will not appear on the Heatmap. We only have access to GPS points from our own app, so the ride has to be logged with our app to appear.

What are Streaks?

We have two types of Streaks in the app: Day Streaks and Week Streaks.

You will see the My Streaks section on the ‘Me’ tab. Streaks are a fun way to motivate yourself to get out and ride as often as possible.

Every day you ride, your Day Streak will go up. How many days in a row can you ride? Your best ever Streak is shown in the gold medal.

My Streaks screenshot from the app

The Week Streak goes up as long as you ride at least once per week. Log a ride anytime between Monday - Sunday and it will count towards your Week Streak.

  • In time we will introduce a setting so you can choose which day of the week you want your Week Streak to start on
  • All sources are counted in your Streaks, so you can log rides with automatic logging, 3rd party apps, or manually, and they will all contribute to your Streak

How can I give feedback on the app?

There is a 'Contact Us' section under the More tab in the app. Click the 'Open Chat' button to send a message to our support team. We aim to respond within one working day to all messages.

You can also support@lovetoride.net if you're facing an issue or have general questions about Love to Ride or the web platform.

Or you can email Christian and Laurence at product-team@lovetoride.net

How can I give feedback as a beta tester?

Thanks for joining our beta test! Your feedback will help us develop an awesome app that can help more people ride in communities across the world.

If you're beta testing the iOS app then you can share screenshots within the Testflight app when you're beta testing. Take a screenshot by holding down the main button and the power button at the same time and click 'Share Beta Feedback'. Please share as many details as possible so we can understand the context. All feedback is welcome.

If you have any feedback on how the app can be improved, please email Christian and Laurence at product-team@lovetoride.net

Happy riding!

Questions about prizes

How do I win prizes?

If there are prizes to win, you will see them on the Prizes page. You can win prizes in a variety of ways - by earning points, sharing a story, and encouraging other people to ride. Each of the prizes will have the criteria for winning them outlined on the page. Prizes are drawn randomly based on these criteria.

Which prizes am I eligible for?

Head over to the Prizes page to see what’s on offer. Some prizes will have special conditions (for example, only new riders are eligible for some prizes), or only be for riders who are taking part in a campaign with their workplace. If you’re not eligible for prizes, you’ll see a banner at the top of the Prizes page with more info on how you can take part and get access to prizes.

Why do we offer prizes based on gender?

We strongly believe that riding bikes should be for everyone. Women are typically underrepresented within cycling and so we do what we can to support and engage more women in our campaigns. This can sometimes mean offering prizes exclusively for women or reserving some prizes so that women are equally represented amongst the winners.

ďťżIn order to win one of these prizes, you need to have told us your gender within your profile settings. Check here to see if this information is complete on your profile. ďťżNon-binary riders will be eligible for all prizes and if the prize offered has multiple variants then the winner will be offered the choice between options.
