Merri-bek has a mix of off-road paths, protected bike lanes, and low-stress neighbourhood (or 'shimmy') routes to help you safely ride to your destination.
The Upfield Shared Path is the north-south spine through the centre of Merri-bek, starting at Box Forest Road in Glenroy and running through the south towards the CBD. The path is predominantly traffic-free, and the recently upgraded section between Moreland Station and Coburg Station provides plenty of space for new riders to get used to their wheels. Plus, there are ping-pong tables, dog parks and bike repair stations along the way!
The Merri Creek Trail wraps around the eastern edge of Merri-bek, while the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail provides a north-south connection to the west. Both creeks are beautiful to ride during the day, and make for a great weekend family ride!
The M80 trail provides a shared path across the northern edge, while the Capital City Trail connects across the southern border. Why not try the Capital City Loop (link)? We're literally girt by trails!
A network of signed 'shimmy' routes directs you along low-stress local streets to connect you to local destinations and to other parts of the protected and off-road cycling network. Look out for painted bikes & arrows on local roads to locate a shimmy route.

The Upfield Path, M80 trail, Moonee Ponds Creek, Merri Creek, and the Capital City Trails (just south of Merri-bek) are all off-road paths that are suitable for all ages and abilities.
Merri-bek has a heap of local bike shops where you can rent or buy a new or second-hand bike!
For those up for a longer ride, why not try a loop of Merri-bek? Taking in the Merri Creek Trail, M80 Trail, Moonee Ponds Creek Trail, Upfield Line, and the Capital City Trail you can travel the whole way round almost entirely off-road. This loop Is about 40km long.
