It depends on whether you want to carry all of your own gear (and how much, i.e. camping and cooking gear, or just a few clothes because you&#39;ll sleep in motels and eat in restaurants); also on whether you intend to be on paved roads or not. One example is the recently-discontinued Trek 520. They made it (with some changes over the years) for 40 years. Check it out, at least as a starting point for your thinking.

1/3 the carbon footprint of a car? When I do the math on kilowatt hours, one full charge gets me three commuting trips, which would normally cost me a gallon and a half of gas. And the charge for my bike works out to cost me about six cents. I don’t know how you’re figuring your carbon footprint, but it should be a whole lot less than what you’re describing.
