We want more people to experience first hand how easy and enjoyable riding a bike can be. That’s why the aim of the challenge is to encourage as many people as we can to ride for at least 10 minutes over the month. While the end goal is to encourage more people to ride their bikes to and from work and for errands, bicycling to work isn't feasible, comfortable, or appealing for everyone. By encouraging people to first bicycle in a way that makes them feel safe and allows them to fully enjoy it, we've seen that we can encourage more people to eventually bicycle to work and their errands.
It’s:
It will bring a smile to your face and make the world a better place!
And, you and your colleagues can win some great prizes!
See the website FAQ.
Love to Ride _____ is a free, fun competition for workplaces to see which can get the most of their employees to ride a bike. The workplaces and departments that get the highest number of
[POINTS: points (for their size category) win a team prize. You can earn points for logging rides and encouraging your colleagues to get on a bike (they only have to ride for 10 minutes to take part - nothing crazy!), plus there are a host of bonus point categories as well!]
[PERCENT: staff to ride a bike will win a team prize. The more staff who log rides and encourage colleagues to ride, the better your chance of winning!]
Love to Ride ____ aims to get more people cycling more often, whether that be for fun, exercise or to work. Once someone tries riding a little, it becomes easier and easier for them to consider riding to the store or riding to work.
Imagine if more people cycled in _____ - our air would be cleaner, our city and communities would be more peaceful and our streets would be safer.
Studies have shown that where cities have higher numbers of people on bikes, there is a higher presence of cyclists and subsequently fewer incidents per cyclists.
Anyone who lives or works in the ______ area and workplaces in this area too*. You can sign up with your workplace or as an individual, and complete as an organization or department.
Organizations or departments with 1 or 2 employees will have their staff count set at the minimum of 3 employees (otherwise it’s too easy to get 100% participation!).
Cycling clubs and other clubs can't register as a workplace - we want cyclists to help us spread the love of cycling, so please register your workplace and get your colleagues involved.
All we need to know is the address, a contact person, and the number of people who work in your organization or department.
It’s free to take part and can be done in your own time, so you shouldn’t need official permission from your organization but we do recommend getting it.
Organizations and departments will compete against those of a similar size for a fair chance of winning. There are six size categories:
A 10 minute ride on a pedal bike (including electric bikes). Doesn't have to be a ride to work - it can be any kind of ride!
Rides on motorcycles, scooters or stationary cycles are not counted.
You’re welcome to ride for more than 10 minutes, most people do. However, 10 minutes is an achievable goal for someone who hasn’t ridden a bike in years. It’s also just enough to leave a big smile on their face, which is exactly what we’re trying to achieve.
We need your help to spread your love of bicycling and enlist your workplace. Your experience can help those thinking about biking take the all important step.
By recording your rides, you are providing a record of biking in _____ which can be used to argue for and justify funding for improved bicycle infrastructure.
They are the team captains who will encourage their coworkers to register, ride, record their rides and motivate them to victory.
By default, those who register their organization or department are automatically selected as Champions. If you do not wish to be a Champion or are keen to be one at your workplace, please get in touch.
When you register for the Bike Challenge, you will tell us how often you have ridden in the last 12 months. Those who haven't ridden at all in the last 12 months are classified as 'new cyclists'.
During Love to Ride _____ we’ll be holding try-a-bike sessions where you can borrow a bike and be trained by a qualified instructor. These sessions are held in safe off-road areas, suitable for novices. We can also provide one-to-one assistance. Please get in touch with the Challenge Coordinator to find out more.
You can borrow a bike at the try-a-bike sessions held during Love to Ride _____. See the events page for details
Ride a bike for 10 minutes for fun, exercise or to work during the month long Challenge period and be entered into a prize drawing.
Your organization or department can also win a team prize if you get the highest proportion of staff to ride a bike. You will compete against those of a similar size for a fair chance of winning.
